On June 25th, 2013, Brazilian special forces ("Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais" or "BOPE") entered "Nova Holanda" - a favela community located in the "Complexo da Maré" - searching for suspects of an alleged robbery that took place during a protest the night before. Ten people died as a result. At the time of this operation, five mortalities had been reported in all the protests throughout the entire nation.
A week later on July 2nd, 2013, a vigil was held in the memory of those victims.
